Green Team kites for the cause of cancer

Fundraising Green Team say they are addicted to kiting. That's a good thing!
Fundraising Green Team say they are addicted to kiting. That’s a good thing!

“Here’s a picture of all of our kites that we used on our last vacation kiteboarding in Maui.  We named our KB4C team ‘The Green Team’ because everyone on our team loves nature and enjoys outdoor activities. Taking care of the environment is important to us. We have been addicted to it since our first lesson! We are from Colorado and Florida,” wrote Brad and Mary Thompson.

The kiteboarding GREEN TEAM rocked today’s Kiteboarding 4 Cancer  today. They had a rider on a hydrofoil board – not an easy board for a six hour ride. They helped raise money to support our programs that help young adults with cancer.

What a way to ride

“An experience on Mt. Hood during Camp Koru turned my world around.”

Samantha and the Mountains

“When I look out across the Willamette Valley and see the those little white triangles peaking over the hills, my heart skips a beat. My soul is connected to them. An experience on Mt. Hood during Camp Koru turned my world around.

Samantha finds solace in nature“I have learned that it is not the mountain I must conquer, but myself and I continue to look to the mountains for healing. Everyone has their own mountain to conquer. Mine just happened to be cancer” – surfboard artist Samantha Newton.

Her board will be auctioned off at Boards of Hope in a little bit – at 6:30 pm here at KB4c.

Team Patagonia and some sexy boards are on their way to KB4C

Patagonia is an outdoor sports/clothing manufacturer with a long history of giving back and environmental stewardship. This year at KB4C, the Patagonia kiteboarding team is back for their fourth consecutive year.

Fletcher Chouinard was an early adopter of kiting, and in the last few years has converted most of his friends that surf into kiters. Every year, more people from Patagonia come and support the event, including surfboard shaper and legend Gerry Lopez, who has recently become addicted to kiting. Patagonia’s team helps raise funds and awareness for Athletes 4 Cancer. Check out these gorgeous custom boards they are donating to our Boards of Hope auction this year.  You can bid on them Saturday, July 12th at 6:30 pm!  Join us in thanking team “Patagonia West.”

JWCF has supported KB4C since the beginning of the event in 2007, embracing the enthusiasm, health and energy contributions of the action sports community to give in the fight against cancer. The John Wayne Cancer Foundation is matching Kiteboarding 4 Cancer’s donations to our beneficiaries for 2009.

Kiteboarding 4 Cancer has researched many deserved and impactful cancer programs to benefit from donor funding to come up with 4 amazing organizations that drive cancer research, awareness, prevention and treatment programs in the Pacific Northwest and west coast:

• Children’s Healing Art Project – Bringing the healing power of art to kids with cancer — Portland, OR
• The Next Door Inc. – Breast Cancer Prevention Program – Hood River, OR
• Children’s Hospital of Seattle — Child Life Program – Seattle, WA
• Celilo Cancer Center — Uncompensated Care Program –The Dalles, OR

Kiteboarding 4 Cancer was founded by a group of Northwest kiteboarders to unite the kiteboarding unity and those in need for a great cause. Kiteboarding 4 Cancer is dedicated to bringing the healing power of wind and water to those affected by cancer through funding of advocacy, awareness, and prevention programs. KB4C raises funds through our annual Kiteboarding 4 Cancer and Stand-Up Paddle 4 Cancer events in Hood River, Oregon.

Kiteboarding 4 Cancer is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, IRS tax ID #42-1737854. We fund our event and charities solely through tax-deductible contributions from private individuals, corporations and foundations.

2009 Kiteboarding 4 Cancer Raises $63,000 and Cancer Awareness

Just when we thought KB4C couldn’t get any better, it did. Participants pumped up their kites and the clouds parted  as 125 kiteboarders and about 20 standup paddlers took to the windy conditions and swell-blanketed waters of the Columbia for the 3rd annual event. Through athlete fundraising, silent and live auctions, a raffle, and beer and food sales, participants raised over $58,000 for cancer programs: Celilo Cancer Center, The Next Door Inc., Children’s Healing Art Project, John Wayne Cancer Foundation, and Children’s Hospital Seattle.
